Schizostylis
Autumn flowering perennials much valued for the addition of late colour as summer plants fade. The plants bear numerous star shaped flowers over narrow flat leaves. Schizostylis derive from a single species (Schizostylis Coccinea) native across the East Cape Province, South Africa and Zimbabwe, where the plant grows along streamsides. Schizostylis have recently been reclassified into the genus Hesperantha, although in the UK the name Schizostylis has been retained for horticultural purposes. The name refers to the prominent “split styles”.

The numerous Schizostylis cultivars make lovely border plants and will also thrive in pond margins. They also make superb specimen container plants, and excellent cut flowers.

Care of Schizostylis
Schizostylis are hardy in the UK,although the flower spikes can be damaged by early frosts. They should be planted in a moist sunny spot and kept well watered during dry periods. If planting in a pond margin ensure that they are not more than 2”/5cm deep. Divide congested clumps in late winter every few years.
