Dierama
|
Angel’s Fishing Rod, African Harebell, Wand Flower
Exquisite hardy evergreen perennials bearing graceful pendulous bell shaped flowers on long arching stems, which sway gracefully in the breeze. Flower colour varies from white through pink & mauve to deep magenta. They make an excellent border plant, and also thrive in gravel. Dierama originate mainly from the Eastern mountain regions of South Africa. The name refers to the funnel shape of the flowers.
There are around 44 Dierama species and many hybrid cultivars. Dierama tend to hybridise easily, with the result that many Dierama sold as a named species turn out to be variable hybrids, although none the less still excellent garden plants. In our nursery, we distinguish these from the true species form by adding the description “hybrid” alongside the species name.
Care of Dierama
Dierama are hardy in the UK although can be damaged by the combination of hard frost and winter wetness. Plant in a moist but well drained sunny spot – eg. on a bank or raised bed, allowing plenty of space to prevent overcrowding and show the plant to its best advantage. Dierama do not flower well in pots.
Dierama dislike disturbance, and if divided are unlikely to flower again the following year.
