Agapanthus
African or Nile Lily, Flower of Love
Striking architectural plants bearing beautiful globes of flowers on tall stems. Flower colour varies from pure white to deepest violet blue – some also with dark purple stems. All of the agapanthus species originate from South Africa and have been known in cultivation in England and the Netherlands since the 1700s. the name comes from the Greek – agape (love) and anthos (flower).

Agapanthus can be grown in herbaceous borders, where taller cultivars are an asset at the back, and smaller and dwarf cultivars add colour and interest near the front. Flowering time is from early summer to early autumn, depending on the cultivar. Agapanthus also look spectacular in containers, flowering best when slightly pot bound. They make superb cut flowers.
Note - During summer months, flowering plants may be dispatched with stem and head removed: they should flower again in the following year .

Care of Agapanthus
Agapanthus should be planted in a well drained soil, rich in humus. For maximum colour effect, plants need full sun, although they will do well in partial shade. Evergreen cultivars are particularly drought resistant.

In recent years, Agapanthus have proved to be remarkably hardy in England although benefit from winter protection particularly in colder regions. For deciduous plants, remove leaves in late autumn, and protect with a layer of mulch. For evergreens, which are generally less hardy, leaves can be left on over winter (and cut back in spring) but the plant must be protected by a good mound of mulch. All variegated cultivars need winter protection – these are best grown in pots and taken into a cold greenhouse or frame or an unheated hallway.

For container growing, we recommend using a good quality compost mixed with up to 1/3 perlite, grit or sand for drainage. Feed with either an annual slow release fertiliser, or with regular liquid foliar feed during summer months. Containers should be protected from winter weather either in a cold greenhouse, or against a wall away from wind.

Agapanthus are little troubled by pests, slugs etc. although suffer occasional problems in the pot with vine weevil (check for a solution at garden centres).
