Box or Boxwood
The quintessentially English hedging plant, Buxus Sempervirens also lends itself to knot gardens, parterres and topiary. Buxus has been in used for formal hedging for centuries, dating back to the Ancient Civilisations, and was also much prized for its hardwood. Buxus is distinguished by its glossy evergreen leaves, and relatively slow robust growth.
Care of Buxus
Buxus will grow in almost any condition, although occurs naturally on chalky or limey soils, and the leaves will appear paler in more acid conditions. In addition, excessive sunlight can cause the leaves to take on a bronze tone - for deepest green colour, box should be planted in partial shade.
Box is susceptible to drought, although dislikes being waterlogged. Box should therefore be planted into a well drained soil, incorporating plenty of organic matter if soil is poor. It is not unusual for newly planted box to turn orange at the tips, but this should disappear as the plants become established, provided that the plants are kept well watered until their roots are fully developed. An application of a balanced foliar feed in spring and autumn will help to maximise growth and colour.
Box should be clipped around the start of June, after the new growth has started to harden off, and can be tidied again in the early autumn. Avoid clipping in full sunlight.
